Normative power quality monitoring at the PCC

The common standards define the voltage quality at the transfer point (PCC) from the energy supplier to the grid user. Measurement at the PCC serves to check compliance with standards (e.g. according to EN 50160) and contracts between energy supplier and energy consumer.

Continuous monitoring makes it possible to detect any deterioration in network quality at an early stage and to look for reasons.
The effectiveness of initiated measures can be checked directly.

Normative power quality monitoring at the IPC

The so-called Demand Side Power Quality (DSPQ) defines the power quality in the area after the PCC. This is known as IPC, the so-called In-Plant Points of Coupling. Simply put, the consumer side.

In the IPC, power quality problems are often generated, transported and received again as interference. For this reason, it is advisable within the IPCs not to rely exclusively on a statistical approach, e.g. according to EN50160, but rather to look at reality using event recorders. In particularly severe cases, high sampling can also be used for analysis, although this requires a high level of expertise in the context of network quality.

Network division in a practical overview

Conclusion

The fields of application of power quality are multifaceted and complex. Depending on the interpretation and the formulation of objectives by the energy producers, the network operators, the distribution companies and the consumers, individual considerations are advisable. Especially in the context of decarbonisation (e.g. e-mobility, renewable forms of energy, switching off base load carriers, etc.) and digitisation/optimisation (e.g. through smart metering, etc.), relevant fields of application urgently need to be identified and designed accordingly.

The legitimate questions of principle: immediate added value Yes/No? Who pays for this?
