Sankey diagrams are thus an effective alternative to conventional flow charts or bar and pie charts, especially when it comes to representing energy flows and quantity flows in production plants. Here, the two axes of the two-dimensional space represent two time dimensions (e.g. date and course of the day), while the value dimension is visualised by a colour gradient. This means that all consumption data for long periods (from several months to years) can now be displayed at a glance.
